The government plans to spend many billions on new frigates. This decision will tie us into USA plans to wage war on China.

While New Zealanders are struggling to feed themselves and find work, the huge cost of any new warships will strangle future governments’ ability to invest in health, education, welfare, housing, climate resilience, and much more.

Just Defence’s report; Charting a New Course – the case against frigates finds:

·    Aotearoa New Zealand is surrounded by the world’s largest moat

·    Frigates are the wrong vessels for ensuring security in the South Pacific

·    New frigates will cost an eye-watering $22 billion over the next 30 years

·    That money should be used to address genuine security threats such as climate change, inequality, food insecurity, etc.
